Questions & FAQs

Is therapy for me?

Everyone is welcome at Intersection Therapy & Advocacy. There is no criteria or diagnosis required for therapy. Some of the reasons folks come to Intersection Therapy & Advocacy include:

  • Navigating Life's Challenges: Whether it's grappling with systemic discrimination, enduring the echoes of oppression, or seeking strategies for resilience, we're here to help.

  • Healing from Trauma: From personal traumas to the collective/community experiences that leave a lasting impact (e.g., intergenerational trauma) my relational approach is tailored to assist in your journey toward healing.

  • Embracing Identities: Together, we'll navigate the complexities of personal and community identities. Whether that be Indigeneity, disability, or the vibrant LGBTQ2S+ spectrum, we will embrace each identity and find the pride.

  • Holistic Well-being: Our exploration extends beyond the mental realm, delving into practices that encompass emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness.

  • Coping with Health Challenges: Whether it's a mental health concern or a physical diagnosis, we provide guidance and support for your unique situation.

  • Cultural Synergy: Working against Western dominance, community-based and spiritual approaches to wellbeing are welcomed to create a comprehensive and harmonious approach to your health.

Trauma and hardship is different for everyone. Some experiences for folx coming to therapy include:

  • isolation, shame, anxiety, fear, being out-of-control or out-of-mind/body, feeling exhausted all the time, hypervigilance, anger, frustration, hearing voices, feeling like I'm 'loosing my mind,' being triggered, irritable, helplessness, having "fuck it" moments, hopelessness, + more.

  • experience of being alone, really sad, being broken because of what happened, like no one understands you, like everyone hates you, like the pressures of school/home/work/other are too much, like it can never get better, or being very confused about everything, + more.

We want to remember that as a survivor, you are not the problem; the systems and structures that harmed you are the problem. We always keep this in mind as we heal.

Lastly, it's okay if right now is not the time for therapy. Whatever you're going through, you are going through at your own pace. When you're ready, we will be here to support you.

What does anti-oppressive therapy mean?

Anti-oppressive therapy provides support for the individual challenges, but also addresses the social issues. The challenges you are facing are very real. Instead of focusing on what is 'wrong' with you or trying to diagnose, we instead focus on what factors (including factors outside of you) have contributed to these challenges. For example, I am a queer person. I manage my anxiety because for many years before I 'came out,' I had to be hypervigilant about my sexuality and identity. Not everyone in society accepts queerness (i.e., homophobia). If we focus only on the anxiety, we are missing key factors behind this challenge for me, and how the way forward can consider these other factors. Learn more about my approach.

How long does each session last?

Typically, a session lasts 50 minutes. However, this is sometimes adjusted up (80 minutes) or down (25 minutes) based on your needs and therapeutic goals.

Is online therapy available?

Yes, Intersection Therapy & Advocacy offers online sessions for clients who prefer or require remote access in BC, Canada.

How often should I attend therapy?

The frequency of sessions varies depending on individual needs. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions, while others might find bi-weekly or monthly sessions more effective. To start, I always recommend weekly or bi-weekly sessions, where possible. We'll collaborate to find what's best for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment to avoid being charged for the session. Learn more about our Cancellation Policy

Is everything I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, everything you share in therapy is held in strict confidence with very few exceptions related to ensuring safety and for legal matters, which will be thoroughly explained in our first session.

Do you offer any group therapy sessions or workshops?

Currently, Intersection Therapy & Advocacy primarily offers individual therapy sessions. However, we occasionally organize workshops and group sessions on various topics. Please check our website or contact us for the latest offerings.

Do you provide therapy in languages other than English?

Currently, therapy is provided in English. If you need assistance in another language, please let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate or provide a suitable referral.

How do I know if we're a good fit?

Having the right fit with a therapist is essential. During our initial discussion or session, we'll explore this together - you'll get a vibe check from me. I will also ensure that what you are looking for is within my scope of practice. If for any reason we determine that another therapist or approach would be more beneficial, I will provide referrals to ensure you receive the care that's right for you.

Is there parking available at your North Vancouver location?
